Our parents told us these stories again and again, their voices grave with warning. But, as children, our senses seemed programmed to cancel out such advice. The next day, we’d be back in our new Brazilian Ronaldo jerseys, running towards the hills, ready for adventure. There were grasshoppers to catch, mushrooms to gather, birds to chase. The thrill of the unknown pulled us back every time, despite the legends that hung like a fog over the mountains.
