On a rainy morning in Old Town Lilongwe, a black Mercedes slows beside three women selling bananas from a veranda. The man inside buys a bunch, offers a business card, and hands over three hundred thousand kwacha for a phone. Ruth Chikolola takes the money, walks away without looking back, and does not call.

In that time, she travels to Zambia, builds a fish import business, and turns his seed money into something entirely her own.
